Argumentative Essay About Self Reliance - 755 Words
Argumentative Essay On The Excerpt Self Reliance By, Shalom Orsini Ralph Waldo Emerson, a famous poet, wrote the excerpt Self Reliance in it he claims that men have lost their independent thought. Emerson argues that men have become too reliant on instruments and predetermined thought and have as a whole not developed enough deep empirical analyzation skills. The following two sentences in paragraph five gives an example of deprived thought of man by the metaphor of a coach. ââ¬ËThe civilized man has built a coach, but has lost the use of his feet. He is supported on crutches, but lacks so much support of muscle.ââ¬â¢ Overall Emersons idea of man being weak in analytical terms in modernity differs from another view in that man needs moreâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In comparison to Emersonââ¬â¢s view on manââ¬â¢s weakness the other side of the coin argues that man is not altogether at fault but those who nurture him are. Particularly this is because it is proven that a man that grows up in household that nourishes independent thought has a better chance of accomplishing this then vise versa. For instance, this can be seen in Henry Kissinger a US politician who grew up with an uncanny intellect because he was fostered as a little child to read the torah and various other books, (Kissinger by Walter Isaacson). Likewise in comparison Abraham Lincoln grew up in an environment that had disdain for knowledge (Lincolnââ¬â¢s father) and in turn did not gather intelligence as fast as Kissinger, (A Self Made Man: The Political Life of Abraham Lincoln Vol 1 1809-1849 by Sidney Blumenthal). To wrap up, the view about manââ¬â¢s weakness in independent thought differs from Emersonââ¬â¢s view that man is inherently weak in thought. In contrast to Emerson there is agreement on independent thought without the use of knowledge of the world. Particularly in the first two sentences of paragraph five describes civilized man need of knowledge of the world in order to master it. Especially this is important because in general a man that practitioners a certain area of focus will have greater chance of success with more knowledge, (Benjamin Franklin An American Life, by Walter Isaacson).
